I moved my graduation photos and videos from a laptop onto a portable storage device before the laptop was going to be cleaned up. The transfer seemed fine at first, but afterward the ZIP folder appeared empty, and some individual photos showed as incompatible or corrupted. A few photos still open normally. I can't download the originals again because the download period ended months ago, and the photos are very important to me. What is the safest way to try recovering them?

Try recovery software only after protecting the original drive. Tools such as PhotoRec or other reputable recovery programs can search for image data even when the folder structure and filenames are broken. The reference photos some programs request usually help identify the camera’s file format; they don’t have to be the exact same pictures, and recovery can sometimes work without them. Save recovered files to a different drive, never back onto the portable storage device.
The empty ZIP may simply be corrupted, so ask your classmate for another copy of the class videos if possible. For your personal photos, avoid repeatedly repairing or extracting the ZIP until you have made an image of the device.
