I'm moving across the country by plane, so driving my mid-sized desktop isn't an option. The case came from a previous owner and has a tempered-glass side panel, which makes me nervous about damage during transit. I'm considering either removing the GPU and other loose components, having the case professionally packed and shipped with insurance, or taking the components out, packing them in anti-static bags inside my luggage, and buying a new case after I arrive. Shipping looks likely to cost more than $130 before insurance and packing materials, while decent replacement cases can sometimes be found for less. I'll already have several checked bags, clothes, and a monitor, so adding the entire PC as another bag isn't very practical. What would be the safest and most reasonable option?

A second or extra checked bag could work in theory, but a tempered-glass case is risky around baggage handlers, even if it’s surrounded by clothing. Since you already have several bags and limited hands, separating the expensive components from the case is probably the most manageable approach. Keep the GPU and other delicate parts with you rather than putting them in checked luggage if possible.
If you decide to ship instead, don’t rely on the carrier’s standard handling. Use rigid outer packaging, thick cushioning on every side, internal support to stop movement, and enough protection around the glass that it can’t contact the box. Insure it for its replacement value, but remember that insurance may not cover damage caused by inadequate packing.
I’d remove the GPU and any other heavy parts that can come loose, then pack those separately in proper anti-static protection. For the remaining case, use dense foam or expanding packing foam so the interior can’t flex or let components move around. If you ship the case, pack it as though it will be dropped or tossed and pay for insurance. Professional packing is worth considering because ordinary bubble wrap and loose peanuts may not protect a tempered-glass panel or internal components.
Given the numbers, I’d take the components with you and buy a new case once you arrive. A basic case can be found for around $30–$130, and that may cost less than shipping, insurance, and specialty packing. It also lets you replace the case you already dislike instead of paying to transport a fragile tempered-glass one.
That’s where I’m leaning. I can afford to buy a case after arriving, and avoiding the shipping headache is probably worth it.
That’s my biggest concern with shipping—the case would need to survive being handled pretty roughly, and I’m not sure the packing cost makes sense when a replacement case could be cheaper.
