I've used laptops for about 20 years, but I'm finally building a desktop PC for gaming. I've never experimented with undervolting because my laptop CPUs already use low-power settings. I'm now learning how to undervolt a Ryzen processor and keep hearing that I need to be careful. What exactly can happen if the voltage is set too low? Could it permanently damage the CPU or GPU, or would it simply become unstable?

The amount you can reduce varies from chip to chip. For example, one Ryzen 5 3600 was stable with roughly a 50 mV reduction, while a 100 mV reduction caused blue screens during heavier workloads. The benefit was mostly lower temperatures—around 90°C down to 82°C—with little change in benchmark performance. Test gradually and check stability instead of copying someone else’s exact settings.
Undervolting is generally safe. If you lower the voltage too much, the system usually becomes unstable, causing application crashes, freezes, reboots, or a blue screen. It normally doesn’t physically damage the hardware; the main risk is losing unsaved work or corrupting data if crashes happen during writes.
While testing, don’t configure the undervolt to apply automatically at startup right away. Find a stable setting first by testing it under gaming or other heavy workloads. If the system crashes, you can reboot at stock settings and adjust the voltage more conservatively.
