Is This AM5 PC a Good Long-Term Build for Cybersecurity, Linux, and Virtual Machines?

I'm building my first desktop primarily for a Master's program in cybersecurity and cryptography rather than gaming. I'll use Linux, programming tools, virtual machines, reverse-engineering software, penetration-testing labs, and cryptography workloads. I'd like the system to remain useful for roughly 6–8 years while allowing gradual upgrades.

The planned parts are an AMD Ryzen 5 7600, Gigabyte B650M Gaming Plus WiFi motherboard, 16GB of DDR5 RAM with an eventual upgrade to 32GB, a 512GB NVMe SSD, an MSI MAG A650BNL 650W 80+ Bronze power supply, and a Gamdias Talos E3 Mesh case. I'll use the processor's integrated graphics initially and may add a mid-range card such as an RX 7600 or RTX 4060 later.

Is this motherboard suitable for long-term use? Will Micro-ATX limit future expansion if I only expect to install one graphics card? Are there any parts you would change, especially for virtualization, storage, memory, and Linux compatibility? Overall, is AM5 a sensible platform for this workload and future upgrades? My budget is limited, so I'd prefer changes only where they provide a meaningful improvement.

The Ryzen 5 7600 is perfectly capable for general programming, Linux, security tools, and light-to-moderate virtual machines. The main weaknesses are the 16GB of memory and 512GB drive. Virtual machines consume RAM quickly, so 32GB should be treated as an early upgrade, and a 1TB SSD would make the system much more practical. If you regularly compile large projects or run several VMs at once, a Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9 would help, but it is not essential for getting started.

My initial virtualization workload should be fairly light, and I’ll upgrade to 32GB as soon as the budget allows. The CPU and motherboard are also available locally at an unusually good price, so I’m considering buying those first and upgrading the rest gradually.

The Micro-ATX board is not automatically a problem. If you only need one graphics card, its main slot is enough. The trade-offs are fewer expansion slots and potentially fewer M.2 connectors than a full-size ATX board, so check the exact storage layout and how many drives you expect to install. For one GPU, extra expansion cards, and a normal number of SSDs, it should be adequate.

Storage expansion matters more here than the graphics card. Additional M.2 slots, SATA ports, and enough room for extra drives may be more useful for labs and virtual machines than a second full-length PCIe slot.

The platform is a reasonable starting point, but a six-to-eight-year plan depends more on current capacity and component quality than on the socket alone. The power supply should be checked carefully for local warranty and reviews; if you later install a higher-power GPU, replacing it with a better-quality unit may be sensible. Also verify that the case has good airflow and that the motherboard has the firmware and Linux support you need. If buying now saves substantial money, the 7600 and B650 combination is defensible—just don’t rely on future upgrades to compensate for too little RAM and storage today.

I would prioritize memory and storage over a dedicated GPU. Integrated graphics are sufficient for a Linux desktop, terminals, coding, and most security tools, so you can add a graphics card later if you actually need GPU acceleration or gaming. Try to buy two matching memory modules, and check whether the board supports the capacity you may eventually want. A 1TB SSD would also be a worthwhile target because virtual-machine images and lab environments fill 512GB surprisingly quickly.
