Will 4x8GB DDR4 Be Stable With a 5500X3D and RTX 5070?

I'm building a system with a Ryzen 5 5500X3D and an RTX 5070, and I'm considering filling all four motherboard DIMM slots with 8GB DDR4 modules. The sticks would be from the same manufacturer and rated for the same speed. Should I expect any stability problems, reduced memory speed, or difficulty running the advertised settings?

Four DDR4 sticks will usually work, especially at standard speeds. The main concern is enabling XMP or trying to run particularly fast memory, such as kits rated above 3600 MT/s. You may need to reduce the memory speed or loosen the timings if the system is unstable.

Using all four slots puts more stress on the CPU’s integrated memory controller than using two sticks. Whether the advertised speed works depends on the specific processor, motherboard, BIOS, and memory kit, so there’s no guaranteed answer. Four modules generally have a lower maximum overclocking headroom than two.

Many AM4 systems handle this configuration without trouble. A 5500X3D running four 8GB sticks at 3200 or 3600 can be perfectly stable, particularly on a later-generation B550 board. It may also work with two separate kits, although the system could need to use the slower kit’s timings.
