I recently started Oblivion Remastered again after it previously ran almost flawlessly, but now it either runs terribly or crashes shortly after launching. My hardware seems healthy and other games work normally. I'm using an RTX 2070 and an i7-9700K, which are older but still handle modern games reasonably well. Has anyone found reliable settings or workarounds that make the game run smoothly and reduce crashes?

You’re definitely not alone. People with significantly faster graphics cards and CPUs have also reported unusually high GPU usage, poor frame rates, and crashes. That points to inconsistent optimization or port-specific problems rather than your RTX 2070 being automatically incapable of running it.
The game’s optimization seems to be rough even on much stronger systems, so this may not be a problem with your hardware. Ray tracing is especially demanding, and lowering or disabling it could make a major difference. Also check for community-made configuration tweaks that adjust the game’s INI settings; those reportedly improve performance without making the visuals look awful.
There are ongoing community fixes and performance projects, but some are still works in progress and may not resolve crashes. For a more dependable experience, heavily modding the original Oblivion—or waiting for a more mature overhaul project—might be less frustrating than trying to force the remaster to behave.
Try lowering your mouse polling rate if you use a high-polling-rate mouse. One player found the game was nearly unplayable at a high rate but became stable after switching to a lower setting. It’s an unusual fix, but easy to test and may help with severe stuttering or instability.

It can run poorly even at low resolutions, so resolution alone may not solve it. The configuration tweaks are probably worth trying before giving up.
