I enabled iCloud sync for Notes on my iPhone so a friend could share a note with me. A few hours later, I noticed that all of my notes created since 2023 had disappeared. They are not in Recently Deleted, and they do not appear when I check Notes on iCloud.com. I have tried updating iOS and toggling Notes sync off and on, but nothing has brought them back. I stopped automatic backups because I am worried that a new backup could overwrite the last one, but I am also unsure whether my most recent backup was made before the notes disappeared. The missing notes include diary entries, important lists, and stored usernames and passwords. Is there a way to determine whether they are hidden or actually deleted, and can an older device backup restore them without making things worse?

iCloud Notes is primarily a synchronization service, not an independent archive. If the phone and iCloud reconcile against an older or incomplete Notes state, changes can appear to vanish across devices. Check iCloud.com, Recently Deleted, every Notes account, and any email or third-party accounts that were previously enabled. If the notes are absent everywhere, recovery will likely depend on an older encrypted computer backup or an older device that has not synced yet.
Do not erase the phone or rely on iCloud sync as a backup until you know exactly what happened. Check the dates of every available iCloud or computer backup and preserve any backup made before the disappearance. If you have a Mac or PC backup, making a copy of it first is safest. Apple Support may also be able to check account and sync history, but restoring a backup can replace newer phone data, so it should be treated as a last resort and done only after documenting the current state.
Before erasing or restoring the phone, check whether the notes are still stored locally under the “On My iPhone” account. Go to Settings > Apps > Notes and make sure “On My iPhone” Account is enabled, then open Notes and return to the folder list to see whether a separate local section appears. However, the original poster confirmed that both accounts are enabled and the missing notes still do not appear, so they may not simply be hidden.
I checked both accounts and the notes are still missing. I’m avoiding wiping the phone until I can confirm whether an older backup contains them.
The fact that the notes are missing from both the phone and iCloud makes it especially important not to sign other devices into Notes or toggle syncing repeatedly, since that could propagate the current state.
