I'm upgrading from a Ryzen 7 3700X on AM4 to a Ryzen 5 9600X on AM5. I recently got an RTX 5070, and my current CPU is holding it back. I'm considering an ASUS ROG Strix B850-A Gaming WiFi motherboard with 32GB of DDR5-6000 CL30 memory. Can I move my existing M.2 drive straight into the new motherboard, update the BIOS if necessary, and boot into my current Windows 11 installation, or should I reinstall Windows after replacing the motherboard, CPU, and RAM?

It may also be worth comparing the cost with upgrading your current AM4 system to a Ryzen 5000 chip, especially a 5700X3D or 5800X3D if you can find one at a good price. That would let you keep the motherboard and DDR4 memory, although AM5 gives you a newer upgrade path and DDR5 support.
The M.2 drive should work in the new board, and you can select it as the boot device in UEFI. Since the B850 platform is designed for Ryzen 9000, a 9600X should generally be supported, but checking the board’s CPU support list and updating to the latest BIOS is still a good idea. You can usually update from within the UEFI rather than needing BIOS Flashback.
Windows 11 may boot after the hardware swap, but a clean reinstall is the most reliable option when changing the motherboard, processor, and memory platform. Back up anything important first, then reinstall the latest AMD chipset and network drivers. If you keep the existing installation, remove old chipset and motherboard drivers, clean up the graphics drivers with DDU if needed, and be prepared to reactivate Windows.
Since the graphics card was already installed and its drivers were cleaned up, the bigger concern is the old AM4 chipset and motherboard drivers. The current install may be fine, but reinstalling Windows gives you the cleanest starting point.
Before switching, make sure you have your Windows license linked to your Microsoft account or otherwise have the product key available, because a motherboard replacement can trigger activation. Also save your BitLocker recovery key and suspend or disable BitLocker before the hardware change so the drive doesn’t ask for recovery information unexpectedly.

Some early boards may have shipped with older firmware, so checking the installed BIOS version before putting everything together is worthwhile. It’s not necessarily a problem, but having Flashback available is useful if the system won’t boot.
