I tried adding one leftover RAM stick to a friend's PC. When we powered it on, the computer produced a loud, continuous beep, so we immediately shut it down. We removed the added memory, but the constant beep continued and the PC still will not boot. Is this a RAM compatibility or installation problem, and what should we check next?

Look up the motherboard’s beep-code meanings in its manual. A constant beep commonly points to a memory problem, but the exact meaning depends on the BIOS and whether the sound is coming from the motherboard speaker. Disconnect the power before reseating anything, and avoid repeatedly starting the computer until the RAM and CMOS have been checked.
Since the beeping continues even after removing the new module, the original RAM may have been disturbed or the system may have retained a failed memory-training setting. Disconnect power, hold the power button for a few seconds, then clear the CMOS using the motherboard’s jumper or by removing the CMOS battery briefly. After that, install one known-good stick in the slot recommended by the motherboard manual and test again.
That sounds like a motherboard diagnostic beep rather than a normal ringing or coil whine. Turn the PC off, unplug it, and remove the added RAM. Reseat the original stick firmly, then try booting with only that stick installed. If it still beeps, test the original module in the other memory slots. Make sure the memory type and capacity are supported by the motherboard.
It is definitely a continuous beep, and the PC does not reach the display or BIOS screen.

Also check that the RAM latches on both ends have fully clicked into place. A partially seated module can cause a continuous memory error beep.
