I'm starting college soon for civil engineering and want a desktop capable of handling games, music production, and any physics simulations I may need. Nearly every reasonably priced prebuilt computer I've found comes with Windows 11, but I'm concerned about its privacy practices and built-in AI features. I've never used Linux seriously, although I have some coding experience and am comfortable with computers. Would it make sense to buy a Windows 11 PC and immediately install Linux? How difficult is the transition on a brand-new computer, and should I keep Windows available through dual boot or a virtual machine in case I need it for school software?

Yes, buying a Windows prebuilt and replacing the operating system is completely reasonable. Most hardware is sold this way, and the Windows license usually isn’t a major part of the price. Installing Linux typically means creating a bootable USB, starting the computer from it, and following the installer. Before buying, check that the specific graphics card, Wi-Fi adapter, and other components have good Linux support. Hardware that has been on the market for a year or so is often less troublesome than brand-new parts.
You may also be able to buy a computer without Windows, or purchase one from a manufacturer that offers Linux preinstalled. However, those choices can be more limited or expensive. A normal prebuilt is still fine as long as its components are Linux-compatible. For heavy simulations, your university may provide access to a computing cluster, so ask about that rather than choosing your entire setup around workloads you might not run locally.
Try Linux before committing to a full replacement. You can boot a live USB, install it on a second SSD, or run it in a virtual machine to learn the basics. Keeping Windows on its original drive is also useful as a fallback, since some games, music tools, school portals, and engineering applications either don’t run on Linux or require extra compatibility work. You can always remove Windows later if you discover you never need it.
For civil engineering, I wouldn’t erase Windows immediately. Linux may handle your general work, programming, simulations, and many games well, but applications such as AutoCAD, Revit, Bentley tools, Vissim, SolidWorks, and other specialized CAD software may require Windows. Check the software lists and course requirements for your program first. A dual-boot setup gives you Linux for everyday use and Windows for anything that absolutely needs it.

That makes sense. I’ll find out which applications my courses actually require before deciding whether Linux can be the primary system.
