For people working in the United States, either as employees or independent contractors, what does a typical workweek look like? I'm especially curious about standard hours, overtime, maintenance windows, and on-call expectations. Does freelancing in sysadmin work tend to be steady, or does the workload fluctuate between busy periods and little or no work?

MSP and project work can vary a lot more. Some teams work a strict 40-hour week, while others cover customer work after hours and may reach 50–60 hours during busy periods. In slower periods, the schedule might drop closer to 30 hours. The important thing is whether overtime or availability is clearly paid and documented.
There isn’t one universal schedule. Internal IT and structured support roles are often around 40 hours per week, usually Monday through Friday, with occasional evening or weekend maintenance. On-call can add stress even when you rarely get called, so ask about the rotation and compensation before accepting a job.
Freelancing is usually less predictable for traditional sysadmin work than it is for software development. You might have a very busy contract for a few months and then struggle to find billable work. Short-term project contracts are common, but you need to account for unpaid time spent finding clients, learning, documenting, and waiting for approvals.
A normal US company may advertise 40 hours, but the real expectation depends on the employer. Government, education, nonprofit, and mature corporate IT departments are more likely to stick close to 35–40 hours. Smaller companies and understaffed service providers may expect much more. Also, don’t routinely work unpaid hours—hourly employees should record their actual time, and salaried employees still need reasonable boundaries.
If you’re regularly working 10 or 11 hours while reporting only eight, the employer has little incentive to hire help. Stop donating that time and clarify the overtime policy or start looking for a healthier role.
Automation and cloud projects may give you more flexibility during the day, but deployments and outages can still require work outside normal business hours.
