My current system has a Radeon RX 9070 XT, Core i7-11700K, 32GB of DDR4, an 850W power supply, and a 1440p 240Hz OLED monitor. I play both AAA and competitive games. In Battlefield 6 at ultra settings with FSR Quality, I average around 110 FPS but notice significant stutters during busy scenes. League of Legends also drops to roughly 120 FPS during chaotic fights, which seems low for this GPU and resolution.
XMP, Resizable BAR, and current drivers are already enabled, so I suspect the 11700K's single-thread performance and 1% lows are limiting the system. I'm considering two upgrade paths:
1. Buy a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and an AM4 motherboard for roughly $400, keep my existing DDR4, and use it as a long-term stopgap.
2. Move to a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and AM5 for around $800, despite currently expensive DDR5, in exchange for a newer platform with more upgrade potential.
Is the cheaper AM4 route still worthwhile when I would need to buy the motherboard and CPU, or does it make more sense to pay extra for AM5 now? I'd also like to hear whether a 5800X3D meaningfully improves stutters and 1% lows in busy games, or whether some of the Battlefield performance issues may simply be optimization-related.

A cheaper intermediate option is replacing only the platform with a DDR4-compatible board and a newer processor, such as a Core i5-14600K or similar chip, if you can find good pricing. That lets you reuse your memory and may cost far less than a full AM5 upgrade. The trade-off is that you give up the longer upgrade runway of AM5, so I’d only choose this if the total cost is dramatically lower.
If you’re buying both a motherboard and CPU, AM4 loses most of its appeal. The 5800X3D is excellent for extending the life of an existing AM4 system, but starting a new AM4 build gives you no meaningful upgrade path. Check bundle pricing, sell your current CPU, motherboard, and memory, and the real difference may be much smaller than the headline price. If the 7800X3D bundle is affordable, I’d choose AM5.
That’s the main thing people overlook: the comparison should include the resale value of the current parts, not just the price of the new platform.
Waiting specifically for AM6 probably shouldn’t drive the decision. It is still years away, and you could spend a long time tolerating the performance issue just to avoid buying into AM5. If your current system is genuinely holding back the 9070 XT, either wait for a good AM5 deal or upgrade now; I wouldn’t build a new AM4 system solely as a bridge to an unreleased platform.

This is worth considering if the goal is simply to get through the next few years without paying today’s DDR5 prices. Just make sure the board has adequate VRMs and supports the features you need.
