I'm currently running an Intel i5-10400, an RTX 3070, and 32GB of DDR4 memory. I mainly play at 1440p, and CPU-heavy games are where I'm noticing the biggest performance problems. The most affordable upgrade would be to keep my current DDR4 and move to something like a 14600K, but that would leave me on a platform with very little upgrade room. Budget isn't a major concern, so I'm also considering replacing the CPU, motherboard, and memory now with something such as a Ryzen 7 7800X3D while continuing to use the RTX 3070. Would it make more sense to save money with a CPU-only upgrade, or spend more on a newer platform for better long-term value?

A 14600K would be a substantial improvement over the 10400 and should pair well with your RTX 3070. It’s probably the best value if you want to keep your existing DDR4 setup, although you’d need a compatible motherboard. A 13700K or 14700K is also worth considering if you find one at a good price, but the extra gaming performance may not justify paying twice as much with a 3070.
Before buying anything, check your motherboard’s CPU support list and current BIOS version. An 11th-generation chip could be a cheaper drop-in upgrade, but it may not be enough to justify spending much money on an outdated platform. If you’re already willing to replace the motherboard and RAM, AM5 is the more flexible choice; if you want to minimize cost, a 14600K-class upgrade is perfectly reasonable with the RTX 3070.
Another option is to move to an inexpensive AM5 setup with a Ryzen 5 7600 or 7600X and 32GB of DDR5. In games, it performs around the level of a 14600K, while giving you a much better future upgrade path. You could keep the RTX 3070 for now and later move to a faster Ryzen X3D processor when prices improve. Used memory and motherboards can make this route considerably cheaper.
I’d lean toward the 14600K if you want the cheapest sensible upgrade. You’ll get better performance immediately, and you can replace the whole platform later when newer and cheaper options are available. Moving to a DDR5 platform only makes more sense if you specifically want a long-term upgrade path or plan to upgrade the graphics card soon.
That makes sense. I was also considering a 13700K since it costs a little more but would still give me a noticeable CPU upgrade without holding back the 3070.
My current Z490-Plus motherboard may support 11th-generation Intel CPUs after a BIOS update, so I’m checking that as a possible temporary upgrade too.
