What CPU upgrade makes sense for a Ryzen 5 5500 and RTX 3060 Ti?

I'm planning to sell my current graphics card for roughly $150–$250, and my brother is giving me an RTX 3060 Ti. I mainly play at 1080p and want to avoid a significant CPU bottleneck, especially in open-world games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Cyberpunk 2077, plus survival games and RPGs. I occasionally play competitive games, but extremely high frame rates aren't a priority. Should I upgrade from my Ryzen 5 5500 now, and if so, which AM4 processor fits my budget best?

At 1080p, the answer depends heavily on your refresh rate and settings. Competitive games at very high FPS can expose the Ryzen 5 5500’s limits, while demanding games such as Cyberpunk and RDR2 will often be limited more by the 3060 Ti. I’d keep the 5500 for now unless you notice stuttering or poor CPU-side frame rates, then upgrade when a good X3D deal appears.

You may not need to upgrade immediately. The Ryzen 5 5500 should pair reasonably well with an RTX 3060 Ti, especially in GPU-heavy single-player games. Try the new card first and check your CPU usage and frame times before spending the money. If the performance is already smooth, putting the money toward a better monitor or saving for a larger platform upgrade may make more sense.

For a cheaper non-X3D option, consider a Ryzen 7 5700X or 5800X. Just be careful not to confuse the 5700X with the Ryzen 7 5700 or 5700G, since those use a different cache configuration and aren’t as attractive for gaming. These chips add cores, but they won’t usually improve gaming as much as an X3D model.

If you want a noticeable AM4 gaming upgrade, look for a Ryzen 5 5500X3D or Ryzen 7 5800X3D if either fits your prices locally. The extra cache helps a lot in CPU-heavy games, though the 5800X3D is often over a $250 budget. A 5600X3D can also be a strong choice when available at a good price.
