Should I Keep My DDR5-6400 Kit or Switch to DDR5-6000 for Ryzen 7 7700?

I recently bought a PC with a Ryzen 7 7700, an Asus B650M AYW WiFi motherboard, 32GB of TeamGroup T-Force Delta DDR5-6400 CL32 memory in a 2x16GB kit, a 1TB NVMe drive, and a PowerColor Hellhound RX 9060 XT 16GB. After the purchase, I read that Ryzen 7000 systems often work best around DDR5-6000 and that higher memory speeds can sometimes cause the memory controller to run in a less optimal mode. I may still be able to ask the supplier to exchange the kit for 32GB of DDR5-6000 CL38. Should I make the swap, or keep the faster CL32 kit and configure it manually if necessary?

You can keep the DDR5-6400 kit and try it first. If it is unstable or runs the memory controller at a less favorable ratio, set the memory speed to 6000 MT/s manually in the BIOS. The kit may also give you more room for tuning than a 6000 CL38 kit.

So this is something I would change in the BIOS after installing the memory? I have not built a PC since around 2016, so I am a little rusty.

DDR5-6400 may work normally with your system, so there is no need to exchange it before testing. Enable the memory profile first, then check stability. If the system has trouble booting or is not stable, lower the speed to 6000 MT/s. A 6000 CL38 kit should be easier to run out of the box, but its higher latency makes it a less attractive replacement unless the exchange is free or the 6400 kit gives you problems.

That makes sense. I was mainly worried that the higher-rated kit would automatically cause a major performance loss, but trying it and lowering the speed if needed sounds safer.

On many Ryzen 7000 systems, DDR5-6000 is a practical balance because the memory clock and memory-controller clock can often run synchronously. Above that, the system may switch to a divided controller ratio, which can reduce the benefit of the extra memory speed. After installing the RAM, enable EXPO, set the memory speed to 6000 MT/s if necessary, and check that the UCLK setting is synchronized with MCLK rather than running at half speed. BIOS menu names vary, so stability testing is still important.
