Should I Use exFAT or NTFS for an External Drive With Video Files?

I have an external hard drive that is currently formatted as exFAT. I'll mainly use it for storing and watching large video files from a Windows laptop, but I may also connect it to a TV occasionally. I've heard that NTFS is less prone to corruption and data loss, but I'm not very familiar with file systems. Should I reformat the drive as NTFS, or is exFAT the better choice for this kind of use?

The deciding factor is compatibility. NTFS is usually more reliable and works best in a Windows-only setup, while exFAT is more likely to work with televisions and other consumer devices. Large video files are supported by both, so file size probably won’t determine the choice here. Check whether your specific TV supports exFAT before relying on it for playback.

If the drive were only connected to your Windows laptop, NTFS would generally be the better choice. It has journaling, which helps the file system recover from interrupted writes or unexpected removal, and it handles large files without any practical issue. However, exFAT is much more widely supported by TVs, Macs, and media players. Since you plan to use the drive with a TV, keeping it as exFAT is probably the most practical option. Just eject it properly whenever possible, and keep another copy of anything important because neither file system replaces a backup.

Thanks for explaining that. Since I’ll connect it to a TV sometimes, I’ll keep it formatted as exFAT and continue using safe removal when I can.

If you reformat the drive, use GPT rather than MBR unless you have a specific reason to support very old hardware. Most modern Windows systems handle GPT well, and it is the more current partitioning standard. Be aware that formatting will erase the drive, so copy the files elsewhere first.
