Some of the newest photos on my inexpensive digital camera suddenly disappeared and no longer show up. I haven't connected the camera to a computer or intentionally deleted anything, and these were the pictures I hadn't backed up yet. I'm not very technical, but the photos are important to me. Is there a safe way to recover them, and what should I do first to avoid making things worse?

The photos may not have vanished randomly. Some inexpensive cameras have confusing menus, limited internal storage, or unreliable memory cards, and the camera may only be showing a particular folder or file type. Check the manual for how to browse folders and transfer images, then copy every remaining photo somewhere safe before troubleshooting further.
First, stop taking pictures and don’t format or otherwise use the camera. If it stores photos on a removable microSD card, remove the card and connect it to a computer with a card reader rather than continuing to use the camera. Recovery programs such as PhotoRec or Recuva may be able to find deleted files, although recovery isn’t guaranteed. Save any recovered photos to a different drive, not back onto the card.
I haven’t connected it to a computer or deleted anything, so I’ll stop using it for now and check whether it has a removable memory card.
If the camera uses a low-quality or failing microSD card, files can disappear or become unreadable even when the camera itself still works. A computer may show more information than the camera’s screen, but avoid letting Windows automatically import, move, or delete anything. If the photos are especially valuable, make a full image or clone of the card first, or consider a professional recovery service.
The missing pictures are the most recent ones, and I never got around to downloading them. I’ll check the folders and back up whatever is still visible.
