Why does my phone screen keep going black every few seconds?

My phone's screen repeatedly turns black for a few seconds at a time, sometimes less than five seconds apart. Audio continues playing, and the buttons still respond, so the phone itself seems to keep working. It happens during calls, games, and other activities, making the phone difficult to use. What could be causing this, and how can I fix it?

This sounds like the proximity sensor being triggered, especially if it happens during calls or whenever something covers the top edge of the display. Try making a call and keeping your fingers, case, or screen protector away from the sensor near the earpiece. If the screen stays on when that area is uncovered, clean the top of the phone and check whether the case or protector is blocking it.

I tested it during a call, and covering the top of the screen does make it go black. Do you know what I should try next?
