Is a 90-Minute Drive Worth It for a Micro Center PC Bundle?

I'm considering driving about 90 minutes round trip to buy one of Micro Center's PC bundles. My car gets around 25 mpg and gas is roughly $4 per gallon, so the fuel cost seems manageable, but I'm wondering whether the savings are actually worth the time and travel. Should I compare deals online and hunt for a better price instead? I may end up buying a prebuilt system rather than assembling everything myself.

If you’ve already found a specific bundle and the total savings beat the gas cost, the drive can make sense. But if you’re buying a prebuilt, compare the full prebuilt price against online options first—bundle savings may not matter if the finished system costs more overall.

It depends on the deal and how much you value your time. Some people drive several hours for a really good bundle, especially if the savings are substantial. If you go, combine it with other errands, restaurants, or stores so it feels more like a worthwhile day trip.

Check online bundle deals before making the trip. Newegg sometimes has packages that are as cheap as or cheaper than Micro Center. For example, a Ryzen 7 9800X3D bundle with a motherboard and 32GB of RAM was around $829, roughly $50 less than a comparable local bundle.

The fuel cost probably isn’t huge—around $18–$20 if the trip is roughly 60 miles—but the exact amount depends on how far you’re actually driving and how much traffic you hit. Compare the complete bundle price, including taxes and any parts you’d otherwise buy elsewhere, before deciding.
