What PC should I build for Linux with a budget under $1,000?

I've been saving for a computer and would like to build one for under $1,000. I'm new to PC building and want to use Linux, partly because I've heard it can be a better alternative to Windows. I'm not sure which processor, graphics card, amount of memory, power supply, or other parts would be best. What will determine the right build, and are there any Linux compatibility issues I should know about?

AMD graphics cards are often the simplest choice on Linux because their drivers are generally well integrated into the kernel and desktop environments. Nvidia cards can work too, especially for CUDA or certain machine-learning workloads, but they may require more driver setup and can occasionally have compatibility quirks. Check support for your chosen Linux distribution before buying.

Linux can run on almost any reasonably modern PC, so you don’t need a special Linux-only build. For a new system, 16 GB of RAM and a solid-state drive are good starting points, with 32 GB being useful for heavier workloads. The intended games or applications should determine the processor and graphics card.

The most important missing detail is what you plan to do with the computer. Gaming, programming, office work, video editing, and running virtual machines all call for different parts. Also clarify whether the $1,000 includes a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and operating-system storage. Once those details are known, it’s much easier to balance the CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, cooling, and power supply.

You could also consider used hardware if the goal is simply to get a capable Linux computer cheaply. Linux will run on older systems, but an extremely old laptop may struggle with modern websites and applications even if the operating system itself feels responsive. A recent used desktop with an SSD is usually a better value than a very old machine.
