I currently use a PC with a monitor that has only one HDMI port and no built-in speakers or headphone jack. My PC audio goes to my headset, and I'll soon be adding an Xbox Series S. I'd like to keep both devices connected and switch between them without having to wear separate audio devices or constantly move cables. Would an HDMI switch with an audio output work for this, or is there another setup that can combine HDMI switching with audio extraction?

Look for an HDMI switch that specifically includes an audio output or audio extraction feature. Connect the PC and Xbox to the switch, connect the switch’s HDMI output to the monitor, and plug your headphones, earphones, or speakers into the switch’s audio output. Make sure the switch supports the resolution and refresh rate you want, such as 1080p at 120 Hz if applicable.
An ordinary HDMI switch will only handle the video and won’t necessarily give you a separate headphone connection. An HDMI audio extractor can be used alongside one: the extractor pulls audio from the selected HDMI source while passing the picture through to the monitor. Check whether it provides the type of connection your headset needs, such as a 3.5 mm jack or optical audio.
Since the monitor has no audio output, the simplest all-in-one option is an HDMI switch with a built-in 3.5 mm audio jack. Both devices connect to the switch, and the switch determines which picture and audio source is active. Just be aware that microphone support and chat functionality may not work through every extractor, so verify that feature if you need voice chat on the Xbox.
