Is a 360mm AIO overkill for my 7800X3D gaming build?

I recently built a PC with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 32GB of DDR5-6000 CL36 memory, a Gigabyte B650 Eagle motherboard, a Sapphire RX 9070 XT Pulse, and an NZXT H6 Flow case. I'm currently using an NZXT Kraken Core AIO, but I've read that a 360mm radiator is excessive for the 7800X3D. Would it make sense to switch to a 240mm model, such as the Corsair Nautilus, since it costs about half as much? Or should I simply keep the current cooler?

Any decent 240mm AIO should be plenty for this processor. A 360mm model only really makes sense if you want lower temperatures, quieter fan speeds, or you regularly run heavy all-core workloads. For normal gaming, you’re unlikely to see a meaningful performance difference.

You don’t need to downgrade just because the cooler is technically overkill. The 7800X3D is difficult to overclock and usually draws around 120 watts even under demanding synthetic loads, so a reasonably priced tower cooler would be sufficient. Since the Kraken is already installed, I’d use it rather than spending more money to replace it.

Be careful with cooler recommendations for the H6 Flow. Some thick 360mm radiators, including certain Arctic models, may not fit properly depending on the mounting position and radiator thickness. Check the case’s radiator-clearance specifications before buying anything new.

For gaming, a 360mm radiator is definitely more cooling than the 7800X3D needs. It’s a very efficient chip, and a good tower air cooler would handle it easily. That said, if you already own the Kraken Core, there’s no real downside to keeping it aside from cost, pump noise, and eventually having another component that can fail.
