Which GPU and CPU should I choose for 1440p/240Hz and occasional 4K gaming?

I'm in the USA and open to refurbished parts, but I haven't set a firm budget yet. I'm moving from an Apple M2 Max work machine to a Windows gaming PC and can handle the rest of the component selection once I know where the GPU should start.

A system around $2,200 seems capable of including a Radeon 9070 XT, 32GB of RAM, and a high-end Ryzen 7, though I'm not ruling out spending less. I'm still learning how AMD's current GPUs compare with Nvidia's, so advice or a current buying guide would be helpful. I've heard the 9060 XT may not offer good value compared with stepping up to a 9070-class card, while Nvidia options such as the 5060 Ti are also under consideration.

My main games are League of Legends and StarCraft II. I want 1440p at 240 FPS to be dependable, while 4K at 240 FPS would be a nice bonus. I may also play other RTS games, including older titles that can be limited by single-threaded CPU performance. Would lowering the resolution help in those games, or would the CPU still be the main limitation? Would a Ryzen 7 X3D chip be sufficient, or is something like a higher-end Ryzen X3D processor worthwhile?

What GPU and CPU combination makes the most sense for these goals without overspending?

For just League and StarCraft II, 4K/240Hz is much more realistic than it would be in modern, graphically demanding games. A 9070 XT should be plenty for those titles, and you could potentially use a cheaper GPU after checking game-specific benchmarks. The main caveat is that large RTS battles can still become CPU-limited regardless of resolution, since lowering resolution won’t fix a single-threaded performance bottleneck.

Exactly. Claims that 4K/240Hz is impossible are too broad here—the specific games matter. Those older esports and RTS titles are far easier to run than most current AAA games, so the 9070 XT is more than reasonable for the target.

If you plan to branch out beyond those two games, don’t size the entire PC only around their benchmarks. A 9070 XT gives you much more flexibility at 1440p and 4K than a 9060 XT or 5060 Ti, and the extra VRAM is useful for newer games. Just remember that no GPU can guarantee 4K/240Hz in every title; upscaling or reduced settings may still be needed.

The 9060 XT is generally closer to the 5060 Ti in performance, but it can be considerably cheaper. For a 4K target, though, I’d step up to the 9070 XT or something faster. It offers strong 1440p performance and is a much more practical starting point for 4K. I’d also avoid going below 12GB of VRAM; 16GB is preferable if you want the system to last.

At 4K, the GPU usually matters more, so the 9070 XT is a good baseline. You probably don’t need to spend on the absolute fastest CPU for that resolution: a Ryzen 5 7600X3D could be enough, and the difference between it and the 7800X3D or newer X3D models may be hard to notice when the GPU is the bottleneck. At 1440p and very high frame rates, however, the faster CPU becomes more valuable.

For esports-focused gaming, an X3D processor is a sensible choice because League and especially RTS games can become CPU-limited at very high frame rates. A Ryzen 7 7800X3D should be a strong value option, while a newer high-end X3D chip would provide more headroom. Pairing one with a Radeon 9070 XT should handle 1440p/240Hz comfortably and give you a solid chance at 4K in lighter games.
