I have an older Android phone that I've used since 2021 mainly for archived files and a few apps. At some point, Google Play, YouTube, and Google Translate all stopped working correctly. Google Play reports that there is no internet connection or that I'm logged out, even though the phone has a stable connection and my account works on another device. I also can't view app descriptions or reviews. YouTube won't let me sign in or watch videos without an account, and Google Translate returns an error whenever I try to translate something. Google Maps mostly works, although it previously had trouble finding my location and sometimes required an account for directions. The browser and non-Google apps work normally, and restarting the phone didn't help. My accounts are active and I know the passwords. Installing a custom Android system with Google apps might solve compatibility problems on an old phone, but it’s an advanced procedure and can erase data or leave the phone unusable if done incorrectly. It’s not a safe first step. Check the phone’s Android version and whether Google Play Services is still supported before considering that route; otherwise, use the browser or a newer device for Google services.
Deleting your personal files won’t fix this and could cause unnecessary data loss. Back up your photos, notes, and anything important first. Then check that the phone’s date, time, and time zone are set automatically, install any available Android system updates, and clear the cache for Google Play Store, Google Play Services, and the affected apps. You can also remove and add your Google account again, but make sure you know the password before doing that. A factory reset should only be considered as a last resort after making a complete backup.
