I recently bought a Gigabyte Radeon RX 9070 Gaming graphics card and currently have a Seasonic G12 GC 550W power supply. My CPU is a Ryzen 5 5600X, which has relatively low power consumption. I'm seeing conflicting advice about whether 550W is sufficient for this GPU, and I'm also considering undervolting it to reduce power usage. Should I keep my current PSU, or upgrade to a higher-wattage model?

The issue isn’t just the advertised wattage. The G12 GC is an older ATX design, while newer ATX 3.0 or 3.1 supplies are better designed to handle modern GPU transient loads. I wouldn’t rely on a 550W older unit for an RX 9070, even if undervolting reduces the average draw.
The 5600X only uses around 70W under typical conditions, so the total system draw may be manageable, but the PSU is still operating with a tight power budget. I’d upgrade to at least 650W, preferably a quality 750W model, especially if you want stability under demanding games and future upgrades.
A Seasonic FOCUS GX-750 would be a sensible replacement. It provides plenty of headroom for the RX 9070 and Ryzen 5 5600X without going overboard, and it’s a better fit than trying to make the 550W unit work at its limits.
I’d avoid running that combination long-term. Even with a fairly efficient Ryzen 5 5600X, a 550W unit leaves limited room for the graphics card’s normal load and short transient spikes. A good 650W unit might work, but 750W would give you a much more comfortable margin. Undervolting can help, but I wouldn’t use it as the reason to stay with an undersized PSU.
Would you recommend a particular 750W model, or would 850W be worth considering?
Claims of power spikes in the 800W range sound exaggerated, but the general point about leaving headroom and using a newer PSU standard still makes sense.
