My laptop and desktop are signed into the same Microsoft account, and OneDrive has recently started repeatedly syncing or backing up the laptop's files to my desktop profile. I only want to use the account for convenient access to apps such as Adobe, not to mirror the computers.
I've tried turning OneDrive's backup and sync settings off, but after restarting the laptop, OneDrive seems to enable itself again and begins uploading large amounts of data. This has happened several times, causing the laptop's fans to run constantly and requiring me to spend hours removing unwanted files. I store my work on a separate external drive, so I'd like to stop OneDrive from syncing altogether—or at least prevent it from backing up my Desktop, Documents, and other folders. What settings should I change, and is disabling OneDrive at startup or unlinking the laptop from the account the best solution?

You can also prevent it from launching automatically: open Task Manager, go to Startup apps, find OneDrive, and disable it. Before uninstalling or unlinking it, confirm that important files are available offline on the laptop or copied to your external drive. Otherwise, some files may only exist in the cloud.
Check OneDrive’s official settings for turning off folder backup, especially Desktop, Documents, and Pictures. If you don’t want OneDrive running on the laptop at all, make sure any files you need are stored locally first, then unlink the laptop from OneDrive or uninstall it. Simply stopping synchronization temporarily may not prevent it from starting again after a reboot.
If you need a temporary workaround, mark the network as metered so OneDrive won’t freely sync over it. That can reduce the immediate upload, but it isn’t a permanent fix—the better approach is disabling folder backup or disconnecting this laptop from the OneDrive account.
