I currently have a system with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, RTX 5080, and 32GB of RAM, paired with a 27-inch 1440p 165Hz IPS monitor. I'm considering switching to an OLED display and am trying to decide between 1440p and 4K.
I'm only interested in a 27- or 32-inch monitor. My main concern is that 4K could make the system feel less future-proof and force me to lower graphics settings or rely heavily on upscaling. I'm fine using DLSS, but I prefer Quality mode rather than Balanced or Performance. For people with similarly powerful systems, is the sharper 4K OLED image worth the potential loss in frame rate, or is a high-refresh 1440p OLED the better choice?

It mostly comes down to your frame-rate tolerance. A 1440p OLED at 240Hz or higher will feel much smoother and more responsive, especially in competitive games, and the 5080 will have an easier time maintaining high settings and frame rates. If you mainly play single-player games and are happy around 60–120 FPS, 4K OLED offers noticeably better clarity and is probably the more satisfying upgrade.
If you have the desk space and budget, keeping both displays is the ideal solution: use 4K OLED for visually demanding single-player games and 1440p high refresh for competitive titles. If you can only buy one, I’d choose based on the games you actually play. A 32-inch 4K OLED is the stronger visual upgrade, while a 27-inch 1440p OLED is the safer choice for high FPS and long-term performance headroom.
A 4K monitor does not force you to render every game at native 4K. You can use DLSS Quality, or drop to 1440p when necessary, while still benefiting from the OLED contrast, HDR, and overall presentation. However, 1440p on a 4K panel can look softer than native 1440p, especially at 32 inches, so I would treat 4K as the primary resolution and use upscaling rather than expecting it to look identical to a native 1440p display. DLSS Performance at 4K is not automatically equivalent to DLSS Quality at 1440p; the result depends on the game and reconstruction implementation.
Don’t worry too much about future-proofing the monitor. You can always reduce settings, enable DLSS, or use a lower internal resolution later, whereas you cannot make a 1440p panel sharper. With a 5080, 4K is a reasonable choice today, but avoid buying it expecting every future game to run at maximum settings and very high frame rates without compromises.
The RTX 5080 is certainly capable of 4K, especially with DLSS Quality, but 1440p is still its comfortable high-refresh target. At 4K, demanding games with max settings or path tracing may fall below 100 FPS, while less demanding games should run very well. If you value image quality and immersion more than extremely high frame rates, a 32-inch 4K OLED is a great match. At 27 inches, the difference between 1440p and 4K is less important, so a fast 1440p OLED may make more sense.
That’s helpful. I’m not having any CPU issues at 1440p—I’m mainly worried about losing too much performance and VRAM headroom with 4K.

That’s exactly my concern. I’d rather lower a few settings than give up a consistently high frame rate, so I’d personally stay at 1440p until a future GPU upgrade.
