My laptop gets hot and the fans become very loud when I run demanding programs, especially Minecraft. I have two cats, so I suspect dust and cat hair may be blocking the cooling system. Everything else still works normally, but my parents think the laptop needs replacing simply because it is about four years old. How can I show that it may only need cleaning or maintenance instead of a new computer?

A fair compromise would be: clean and test the laptop first, then reconsider if it still overheats or cannot handle the programs you use. Back up important files and run basic storage and memory checks while you are at it. If your parents are offering a replacement anyway, keeping the old one as a backup is also an option, but there is no automatic expiration date at four years.
Dust can prevent the cooling system from working properly, so the fans may run at full speed simply because they cannot move enough heat out. Clean the vents and internal fans carefully, and check whether the temperatures improve before discussing replacement. Avoid forcing the fan to spin with compressed air; hold the blades still and use short bursts.
The thermal paste between the processor and cooler can also dry out over time, although cleaning should be the first step. If the laptop is still unusually hot after cleaning, a technician can inspect the paste, fan, and heat pipe. Repasting is more involved than basic dust removal, so it is reasonable to get help if you have not opened laptops before.
Start by cleaning the vents and fans, then test it again. If you are nervous about opening the laptop, look up a teardown guide for the exact model or have a repair shop clean it. Four years alone is not a reason to replace a laptop that still does everything you need.
