Is this 1440p gaming PC unnecessarily powerful, or a good long-term build?

After nearly ten years with my old computer, I'm planning a major upgrade to a capable Linux gaming system. My current setup uses two 60 Hz 1080p office monitors, but I intend to move to a high-refresh 1440p display soon and might occasionally play on a 4K TV. Peripherals are outside my roughly $1,400 USD budget.

The build is based around a Ryzen 5 7600X3D, Radeon RX 9070 XT, 1 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage, a 750 W power supply, and a compact Lian Li A3 microATX case. I found the CPU locally for $200 and reserved an open-box RX 9070 XT for $650, so the system is coming in close to budget. My main compromise is memory: due to current pricing, I was considering a single 16 GB DDR5 stick, with the possibility of adding another stick later.

Does this seem excessive for my current 1080p setup, or is it a sensible choice for lasting several years at 1440p and occasional 4K? Are there any parts I should change, especially the memory, SSD, or power supply?

The performance level is reasonable if your goal is a system that will last. A 7600X3D paired with a 9070 XT is an excellent combination for high-refresh 1440p and should handle entry-level 4K well, so it isn’t inherently overkill. You’ll get much more out of it once you replace the 60 Hz monitors.

Be careful with the power supply choice in the A3. The Lian Li EDGE has an unusual connector and cable layout that can make cable management more difficult in that case. A conventional, reputable 750 W modular unit—or a suitable SFX model if you want easier clearance—may be a better fit. Also verify the exact graphics card: the 9070 XT at $650 is a strong deal, while that price would be much less attractive for the non-XT.

I reserved the XT open-box model, so it’s the faster card for the same amount listed in the draft. I’ll compare the PSU dimensions and cable routing before ordering.

The biggest thing I’d change is the RAM. One 16 GB module runs in single-channel mode, which can reduce performance and cause worse frame-time consistency on any operating system, including Linux. Ideally use a matched 2x16 GB DDR5-6000 kit. If pricing makes that impossible, even 2x8 GB is preferable to one 16 GB stick, though 32 GB gives you much more breathing room for newer games, mods, and background applications.

I was considering the single stick as a temporary compromise because memory prices may improve, but I agree that dual-channel should probably come first.

Check whether a local CPU, motherboard, and memory bundle would save enough to justify changing the form factor. Those bundles can provide a better board and properly matched memory for less than buying each part separately. If you’re committed to the compact case, the current direction is still workable, but make sure the motherboard has the features you need and that the graphics card and cooler fit properly.
