I cracked the screen on my school-issued MacBook and need to bring it to the IT department for repair. I'm worried they might reset it, replace it, or otherwise erase the computer. I have important schoolwork saved locally, and there isn't currently an Apple Account signed in. If I create one, could it delete or reset my files and apps, or should I back everything up first with a flash drive or Time Machine?

Creating an Apple Account by itself shouldn’t erase, reset, or remove your local files or apps. However, iCloud syncing only protects files that are actually included in iCloud, and your school may restrict Apple Account sign-ins on the Mac.
Back up the important files before handing the Mac over. A cheap flash drive or another approved storage location is probably the safest option, since IT might wipe the computer, send it away for repair, or replace it with another machine. Creating an account is generally safe, but it won’t protect files if the school resets the Mac unless you’ve copied or synced them first.
