Which countries offer the best pay and demand for DevOps, SRE, and Forward Deployed Engineers?

DevOps and SRE overlap a lot in practice, but they aren’t always identical. DevOps tends to emphasize delivery platforms, infrastructure, and automation, while SRE usually has stronger ownership of reliability, availability, and incident response. Forward Deployed Engineers are closer to technical implementation consultants or solutions architects, but the stronger versions of the role write production-quality integrations and work directly inside customer environments. Large US technology companies can pay extremely well, while smaller companies may pay much less.

The range outside North America can be much wider. For example, a DevOps engineer with four years of experience at an IT company in Madagascar reported earning about $2,000 per month, which is considered a strong local salary but is far below typical US or Western European figures. DevOps and SRE opportunities are increasingly global, including remote work, while Forward Deployed Engineer roles remain more concentrated in companies selling complex products that require hands-on customer implementation. The role may also carry commercial targets or job-security risks if it is closely tied to customer revenue.

I’m a staff-level SRE and technical lead in the UK with more than seven years of experience at a mid-sized global enterprise headquartered in the US. My compensation is around the top few percent of UK PAYE salaries, but the work-life balance is not especially good. I’m frequently expected to make important decisions because the rest of the team lacks the same depth of experience, and the on-call and support responsibilities add pressure. This is probably toward the higher end of the UK market rather than a typical SRE package.

The United States, especially major technology hubs, is probably the clearest answer for the highest compensation across all three roles. Forward Deployed Engineer positions are particularly associated with large software and AI companies that send engineers to help customers deploy and integrate their products. DevOps and SRE roles are much more internationally distributed, although US-based companies often pay more than local employers in other regions. Compensation can vary dramatically once taxes, equity, healthcare, and living costs are included.

In Israel, I worked as a one-person DevOps function for about five years at a startup that was later acquired by a larger company. The compensation was roughly $12,500 per month, but the role included weekend on-call coverage and only one work-from-home day per week. That illustrates why salary alone is not enough for comparisons: the company stage, responsibilities, equity, taxes, and on-call expectations matter just as much.
