My laptop is about five years old, and I've never really done any storage maintenance. I'm starting to run into space problems, even after deleting some files. What's the usual routine for finding and removing unnecessary data? I'm guessing there may be temporary files, unused programs, duplicates, or other hidden folders taking up room, but I don't want to accidentally delete something important.

Move photos, videos, and other personal files to an external hard drive or external SSD. It’s also worth checking for duplicate pictures and documents before transferring everything. If the internal drive is small, some applications or games can be installed on the external SSD instead.
Start with Windows Disk Cleanup or Storage settings, then clear temporary files, uninstall programs and games you no longer use, and empty the recycle bin. Games and unused applications can take up a surprising amount of space.
A visual storage scan is probably the best first step because it shows where the space is actually going. After that, remove only files you recognize, back up anything important, and consider upgrading the internal drive if it’s consistently close to full.

That helps a lot. I wasn’t sure whether moving programs to an external drive was practical, but I’ll look into that after checking what’s using the most space.
