I recently built a gaming PC, but my M.2 SSD does not have enough space. SSDs are extremely expensive where I live, so I'm considering adding an affordable 1TB hard drive instead. I'm looking at a Western Digital model advertised as 7200 RPM with "6Gb/s SATA," but I'm not sure what those specifications mean or whether the drive would be suitable for gaming. Would it be practical to install games on the HDD and move them to the SSD when I want to play, or would the performance be too poor?

A 7200 RPM HDD can usually reach around 120–150 MB/s when reading large, sequential files, but random access is much slower. It’s fine for photos, videos, backups, and general file storage. For modern games, though, expect longer loading screens and possible stutters while the game streams assets. Moving games between the HDD and SSD can work, but it may become inconvenient if you do it often.
“6Gb/s SATA” refers to the SATA interface standard, with a theoretical maximum of 6 gigabits per second—about 750 MB/s. A mechanical hard drive will never reach that limit, so it isn’t a useful performance indicator when comparing HDDs. Most modern SATA drives use the same standard anyway.
If the price difference is manageable, an SSD is still the better choice for a game library. Many newer games depend on fast storage and may load slowly or hitch when installed on a hard drive; some multiplayer titles can be particularly unpleasant. If you have to buy an HDD, a 7200 RPM drive is reasonable for less demanding or older games, but check that it uses CMR rather than SMR. Some budget drives use SMR, which can perform poorly during sustained writes. A WD Blue 1TB or 2TB 7200 RPM model is generally a solid storage option, assuming it is priced competitively.
So it would be usable if I kept most games on the HDD and moved the ones I’m actively playing to the SSD?
