Why Are Minecraft and Fortnite Performing Worse After My PC Upgrade?

I upgraded my son's PC from a Gigabyte Z170 system with an Intel i7-6700K and GTX 1060 3GB to an ASUS PRIME B450M-K II with a Ryzen 5 5600, 32GB of DDR4-3200 memory, and an RTX 3060 Ti 8GB. Despite the much newer hardware, Fortnite and especially Minecraft perform worse than before. Minecraft frequently freezes for 30 seconds or more. Could the Ryzen 5 5600 be the bottleneck, or is there likely another problem? Would upgrading to a Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9 noticeably help?

Check for hardware problems before buying a new CPU. Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures and clock speeds with a tool such as HWiNFO, and run a memory test. Unstable or faulty RAM, a corrupted Windows installation, or a failing storage drive could all cause long Minecraft freezes. If possible, a clean Windows installation on the new system would help rule out software left over from the old motherboard.
