I develop games and work with several engines and tools, and I also play games through Steam. I'm considering replacing Windows with Linux on my Dell Inspiron 15R. My main software is Unity, Unreal Engine, Steam, GIMP, and Vortex for managing mods. Is there a Linux distribution that will let me use all of these reliably, or are there compatibility issues and recommended alternatives I should know about?

Most of this works on Linux, but the experience varies. GIMP and Steam are fine, and many Windows games run through Proton, so it’s worth checking each game’s compatibility before switching. Vortex may be more troublesome; Mod Organizer 2 is often a better option on Linux, with additional tools needed for some mod setups. The distribution matters less than your hardware, drivers, and willingness to configure things.
For gaming, check ProtonDB for the specific titles you play, especially games with anti-cheat or launcher requirements. Linux-native tools such as Godot are usually easier than Unity or Unreal, but switching engines may not be practical if your projects depend on them. A dual-boot setup could be the safest choice if you need complete compatibility with Unreal features, Vortex, or particular games.
Unity has a Linux editor and generally works well, although occasional crashes or editor integration issues can happen. Unreal Engine is possible too, but installation and tooling tend to require more manual setup, and some services or marketplace features may not work properly. If you use an editor other than the officially supported choices, you may need extra configuration for project files, autocomplete, and external-tool integration.
A regular Ubuntu-, Fedora-, or Arch-based distribution should be capable of running these tools; there isn’t one special distribution that guarantees everything. For an older Inspiron, choose a lightweight desktop such as Xfce, Openbox, or i3 so more resources are available for development and games. Make backups and test the setup from a live USB or virtual machine first.
