Should I Choose a 4K IPS or 1440p OLED Monitor for an RTX 5060?

I'm upgrading from an MSI 27-inch 1080p IPS monitor and am deciding between two 27-inch displays for a PC with an RTX 5060 and Ryzen 7 5700X: a REDRAGON Didon 4K UHD Fast IPS monitor with a 160Hz refresh rate for $306, or a REDRAGON Hannibal 1440p QHD OLED monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate for $510. I mainly want a good gaming experience, but I may also use the monitor for general desktop tasks and media. Which option makes more sense for this hardware and budget?

Keep a couple of caveats in mind before buying the OLED. OLED panels can show text fringing during desktop use, and budget models from lesser-known brands may have limited reviews, uncertain quality control, or weaker brightness. For mostly gaming, though, the 1440p OLED is still the more appropriate choice between these two.

I’d go with 1440p OLED. It will still look noticeably sharper than 1080p, and the improved contrast, motion clarity, and response time should make it feel like a major upgrade. Unless you mostly use the display for desktop work, video, or other non-gaming tasks, 4K isn’t worth sacrificing gaming performance for with this graphics card.

1440p is a great balance even on more powerful GPUs. With sensible settings and DLSS or FSR when needed, it should provide a smooth experience without constantly chasing performance.

A cheaper 1440p high-refresh LCD could also be worth considering if the $510 OLED price is uncomfortable. You’d get much better gaming performance than 4K for less money, though you’d give up OLED’s perfect blacks and extremely fast pixel response.

Its 240Hz refresh rate and faster OLED response times are useful for gaming, while 4K will be difficult to run smoothly in many modern titles on this GPU.
