What’s a well-balanced $1,600 gaming PC build for a first-time builder?

My nephew is turning 16 in October, and I'd like to build him a new gaming PC for his birthday. I've only used laptops and have never assembled a desktop before, but I think buying the parts and putting it together with him could be a more memorable experience than simply ordering a prebuilt. My budget is about $1,600 USD for the tower itself, excluding peripherals. I'm located in Oakland, California, and would appreciate recommendations for balanced components and reliable brands, along with any parts or manufacturers that inexperienced builders should avoid. I'm open to buying online, though I may be able to visit a nearby computer retailer if the savings are worthwhile.

If you can make the drive to a nearby Micro Center, their CPU, motherboard, and memory bundles can save roughly $100–$200. A bundle based on a Ryzen 5 7500X3D paired with an RX 9070 XT could leave enough of the budget for a quality SSD, cooler, case, and power supply. That would make a strong gaming-focused build. If visiting the store isn’t practical, expect to spend about $100 more for an online build, potentially using a Ryzen 5 9600X instead.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll look into the bundle options, although I was originally planning to order everything online.

It’s also worth checking online component bundles, since retailers sometimes discount a processor, motherboard, and RAM when purchased together. A Ryzen 7 7700X3D-style bundle or a similar gaming-focused CPU package could provide good value, especially if traveling to a physical store is inconvenient. Just make sure the final parts list includes a reputable power supply, adequate cooling, and enough storage rather than putting the entire budget into the graphics card.

That makes sense. The store is a bit farther away than I’d prefer, so I’ll compare the online bundle prices before deciding.
