I'm building a system with an Intel i7-14700, 32GB of DDR4 memory, and a 1440p display. I'm currently using an old GTX 1070 and want a major upgrade for gaming. I'm considering an RTX 5070 or RTX 5080, but I'm unsure whether the 5080's extra cost is worthwhile at 1440p. What graphics card would offer the best balance of performance and value?

I’d avoid choosing solely by the GPU name. For 1440p gaming, prioritize a card with at least 16GB of VRAM, such as a 5070 Ti, RX 9070, or RX 9070 XT. A regular 5070 can work, but the extra memory on the higher-tier cards should age better.
For 1440p, the RTX 5070 or 5070 Ti is generally the sensible range. The 5080 makes more sense if you’re targeting 4K, very high refresh rates, or have demanding non-gaming workloads. Check your power supply and case clearance before deciding, and consider tuning the DDR4 memory for better performance.
Your processor won’t prevent you from using an RTX 5080—higher-end cards can work with this CPU. The real limits are your budget, power supply, and the games and refresh rate you’re targeting. At standard 1440p, though, the 5080 is usually difficult to justify compared with a 5070 Ti or 9070 XT.
If pricing is reasonable where you live, the RX 9070 XT is a strong value option. It performs around the RTX 5070 Ti level in many games while often costing less. The RTX cards may still be preferable if you care about features such as ray tracing, DLSS, or CUDA-based applications.
So the main question is whether the 5080’s extra performance is worth the price at 1440p, rather than whether the i7-14700 can support it.
