I'm putting together a gaming PC with an $850 USD budget, and I still need to leave room for an SSD. RAM prices are high, so I'm comparing several bundle options. One includes a 7700X3D with a single 16GB memory stick, another has a 9600X with 2x8GB, and a third pairs the 7700X3D with 2x8GB but uses a motherboard with questionable reviews.
Would the 7700X3D still be the better choice despite running in single-channel mode, with the plan to add a matching 16GB stick later? Or would the 9600X with 2x8GB perform better overall because it has dual-channel memory immediately? I'm also unsure about the drawbacks of using four DDR5 sticks later, and whether sticking with 16GB for now is reasonable. I already have the other components and a Thermalright Peerless Assassin cooler, although one bundle includes an AIO cooler as well.

I’d lean toward the 7700X3D bundle with the single 16GB stick. The stronger gaming CPU should still outperform the 9600X in many games, and the extra cache makes it somewhat less dependent on memory bandwidth. Add a matching 16GB stick when you can so you’re running 32GB in dual channel. Just make sure the replacement is as close as possible in capacity, speed, timings, and voltage.
Before deciding, compare the complete bundle prices and motherboard quality rather than focusing only on the processor. A questionable motherboard may not be worth the small savings, and the included AIO isn’t necessarily an advantage if your Peerless Assassin is already available. Since you already have most of the components, a reliable board and an upgrade path are more important than getting extra cooling hardware.
The main downside of 1x16GB is that single-channel memory can reduce performance, especially in CPU-limited games. However, it’s usually a more practical temporary compromise than buying 2x8GB and then replacing both sticks soon afterward. Avoid planning around four DDR5 modules if possible, since four sticks can make high memory speeds and stability more difficult. A 2x16GB kit later would be ideal if you can afford it.
That makes sense. I’ll probably go with the 7700X3D bundle and plan to add another matching stick later.
