I'm currently happy with my RX 6800 XT, but I'm considering spending around $200–$300 to move to an RX 9070 XT. I'd like newer features, stronger ray tracing, and enough performance to play future games at ultra settings in 1080p or high settings at 1440p for at least the next four years. I'm also planning to move to a 1440p monitor and want to try more ray-traced games. This would be strictly for gaming and occasional streaming to friends; my work is mostly coding and data-related tasks that rely on the CPU and RAM. Is the upgrade worthwhile now, or would it make more sense to wait for the next generation? The alternative is a 5070 Ti, but it costs roughly $400 more, and I don't expect to use features aimed at CUDA-based workloads.

The 9070 XT is much better at ray tracing than the 6800 XT, but don’t assume it completely matches Nvidia in the heaviest workloads. The 5070 Ti still has an advantage in some demanding RT and path-traced games, especially titles like Cyberpunk 2077 or Black Myth: Wukong. In plenty of regular ray-traced games, though, the cards are much closer. Check benchmarks for the specific games you play before paying the extra $400.
Streaming doesn’t require CUDA cores. Both cards have hardware video encoders, and the RX 9000-series encoder is good enough for normal game streaming. Since your use case is gaming rather than rendering or other GPU-heavy professional software, the 9070 XT is likely the better value if the price difference is only a couple hundred dollars.
The upgrade makes sense if you specifically want 1440p, ray tracing, or newer upscaling features. If the 6800 XT is already delivering the frame rates you want, there’s no urgent need to replace it—it remains very capable at 1440p. The value depends on whether the newer features will actually change what you can play or how you want to play it.
That’s the thing I’m weighing. The current card still performs well, but I’d like better RT performance and some headroom for a new 1440p display.
For $200–$300, it’s a pretty substantial upgrade. You can expect roughly 40–50% more performance in many games, plus much better upscaling support and a major improvement in ray tracing compared with the 6800 XT. It should be a strong choice for high-refresh 1440p gaming, especially if your current card doesn’t handle the settings you want.
That’s mainly what I’m after. I want to move to 1440p and finally use ray tracing more often, since I’ve only briefly tried it on someone else’s system.
I made a similar jump and was very happy with it, but the difference is easier to notice when moving to a higher-resolution or higher-refresh monitor. If you stay at 1080p and cap your frame rate, the 6800 XT may still feel nearly as fast. At 1440p with higher settings and RT enabled, the 9070 XT has much more room to breathe. For your planned monitor upgrade, I’d lean toward doing it if the deal is genuinely only $200–$300.

I agree, although I’d still avoid buying purely for future-proofing. GPU prices and game requirements are unpredictable, so buy it because the extra performance and features are useful to you now.
