My six-year-old gaming PC currently has an X570 PG4 motherboard, a Ryzen 5 3600, an RX 5700, and 16GB of RAM. Newer AAA games are already becoming difficult to run, and I would like the system to handle upcoming titles over the next few years. I'm considering a Ryzen 7 5700X, an RX 9070 XT, and 32GB of DDR4 memory. Can I keep my current motherboard, and would I need to update its BIOS before installing the new CPU? Also, since the board has four memory slots, can I add a 2x16GB kit alongside my existing 2x8GB kit, or is it better to replace the current RAM entirely?

A Ryzen 7 5700X is a reasonable drop-in upgrade, and 32GB is enough for current gaming in most cases. The RX 9070 XT should be a substantial graphics upgrade, although you should also verify that your power supply has enough wattage and the necessary connectors. For the memory, using a matched 2x16GB kit by itself is generally the safest option. Mixing that kit with your existing 2x8GB kit may work, but different capacities, timings, or memory chips can cause instability or force lower speeds. Keep the old kit as a spare or for troubleshooting rather than combining all four sticks by default.
You can keep the motherboard. It supports newer Ryzen 5000-series processors, but check the CPU support list and BIOS notes for your exact board before upgrading. A BIOS update usually isn’t needed just because you’re adding RAM; update it when required for CPU support or if you’re troubleshooting. If you do update, download the correct BIOS from the manufacturer, copy it to a properly prepared USB drive, and use the built-in BIOS flash utility. Follow the instructions carefully and don’t interrupt power during the process.
If the computer doesn’t start after installing the new Ryzen chip, the BIOS may be too old. It’s worth checking the installed version and updating beforehand if the support notes recommend it.
Running four modules isn’t automatically bad, but it gives the memory controller more work and makes compatibility less predictable. A matched 32GB or 64GB kit is the cleaner upgrade.
