Is the Ryzen 5 3600 Limiting My RTX 5050 at 1080p?

I recently replaced my GTX 1660 Super with an RTX 5050. I mainly play eFootball through Steam and occasionally play newer AAA games. In eFootball, the RTX 5050 can produce high frame rates, but GPU usage often stays around 40–50%, and I sometimes notice stuttering or frame drops. My previous graphics card did not have this issue, so I'm wondering whether the Ryzen 5 3600 is limiting the system.

I play at 1080p and would like to know whether upgrading the CPU or motherboard would be worthwhile. What would be the best budget upgrade, and can my current motherboard support it?

Current system:
- Ryzen 5 3600
- ASRock B450M Steel Legend
- ASUS Dual OC RTX 5050
- 16 GB DDR4 RAM (2×8 GB)
- Corsair 550W power supply

Before buying anything, check temperatures, background processes, memory usage, and whether the game is installed on a healthy SSD. Make sure the motherboard BIOS, chipset drivers, and graphics driver are current as well. If those checks look normal, upgrading from the Ryzen 5 3600 to a Ryzen 5 5600 should improve frame times without requiring a new platform. Moving to Intel or AM5 would cost considerably more because you would also need a motherboard, and possibly new memory.

The Ryzen 5 5600 is probably the simplest and most cost-effective upgrade. It offers noticeably better single-core performance than the 3600, which can help with frame-time consistency and high-FPS gaming. Your B450M Steel Legend should generally support it after a BIOS update, so you likely do not need a new motherboard. Check the CPU support list and update the BIOS according to ASRock’s instructions before swapping processors.

So the motherboard should be fine as long as I update the BIOS first? I would prefer not to replace it if I can keep using my DDR4 memory.

At 1080p, the graphics card has less work to do, so a CPU limitation is more likely, especially in a game that depends heavily on single-thread performance. A Ryzen 5 5600 or Ryzen 7 5700X would be sensible AM4 upgrades, while an X3D chip would be the stronger gaming option if the price is reasonable. You could also cap the frame rate at or just below your monitor’s refresh rate, which may reduce visible stuttering. Check CPU and GPU usage per core while playing, since overall CPU usage can look moderate even when one or two cores are fully loaded.

I’m planning to stay at 1080p because I’m not sure the RTX 5050 is a good fit for 1440p. Would a CPU upgrade still be the better choice for smoother performance?
