Is this high-end 4K gaming PC build compatible, or am I overspending?

I'm building my first desktop after years of gaming on a laptop with poor graphics, unstable FPS, and very loud fans. I'd like a system capable of playing games at 4K, but I'm unsure whether the parts I selected are compatible or sensible for that use case.

My planned parts are a be quiet! Shadow Base 800 case, AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D processor, 64GB of DDR5-6000 CL30 memory with AMD EXPO, an MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk WiFi motherboard, an RTX 5080, a 2TB WD Black SN8100 PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD, a Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 EVO air cooler, and an 850W or 1000W ATX 3.1 power supply.

The motherboard has some lane-sharing behavior between one PCIe slot and its third M.2 slot. I plan to use the primary PCIe slot for the graphics card and the first M.2 slot for the SSD, so I don't think that limitation affects this build.

Does everything work together, and are there any parts you would change? In particular, I'd like to know whether the X870 motherboard, PCIe 5.0 SSD, 64GB of RAM, and higher-end CPU are worthwhile for 4K gaming, or whether I can save money without noticeably reducing performance.

You’re paying too much for the memory. A 32GB kit should be enough for current gaming, and with an X3D processor there is little practical difference between CL30 and slightly looser timings in most games. DDR5-6000 is a sensible target, but there’s no need to pay a large premium for a particular high-end kit.

That makes sense. I’ll go with a reasonably priced 32GB DDR5-6000 kit instead.

The parts are broadly compatible, but several choices are unnecessary for a gaming-focused build. At 4K, the RTX 5080 will usually be the limiting component, so a Ryzen 7 9800X3D is already more than sufficient; the newer CPU is unlikely to provide a meaningful gaming benefit. A B850 motherboard should also be enough unless you specifically need the X870 board’s additional USB4 connectivity or PCIe features.

A PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD will perform essentially the same as a PCIe 5.0 drive in games, while 32GB of DDR5-6000 is generally sufficient. If you regularly use demanding applications or want extra headroom, 64GB is reasonable, but it will not improve gaming performance by itself. The lane-sharing note should not matter when using only the primary graphics slot and first M.2 slot.

Rather than spending on premium parts with little gaming benefit, prioritize a good graphics card, a well-ventilated case, and a reliable fully modular ATX 3.1 power supply. An 850W unit is generally enough for an RTX 5080, while a quality 1000W model gives additional headroom. You could likely save a substantial amount with a B850 board, Ryzen 7 9800X3D, DDR5-6000 memory, and a good PCIe 4.0 SSD without affecting your 4K experience.

Thanks for explaining that the motherboard, CPU, memory, and SSD were excessive for my use case. I’ll probably choose the more cost-effective parts and keep the savings. The system will still be more than powerful enough for anything besides gaming.
