Do I Need a Paid Antivirus for Windows?

I'm considering cancelling my McAfee subscription and want to know whether I'll be reasonably protected without paying for antivirus software. I originally installed McAfee because I downloaded many Sims 4 mods, but I've removed them and don't plan to download similar files again. I avoid pirated games, movies, and shows, use Steam for my games, and generally stay away from suspicious links, downloads, and websites. Is Windows' built-in protection enough for a careful user, and are there any important settings or habits I should follow to avoid compromising my PC?

Defender is adequate for everyday use, but no antivirus can replace safe browsing habits. Keep Windows and your applications updated, leave real-time protection enabled, and be careful with files from unfamiliar sources. Paid security suites can add extras, but they aren’t essential for everyone.

You can also use an on-demand scanner such as Malwarebytes occasionally if you want a second opinion, but don’t run multiple real-time antivirus programs at once. Make sure file extensions are visible, avoid unknown installers, and keep regular backups so a mistake doesn’t become a disaster.

For most Windows users, Microsoft Defender is good enough and works alongside the built-in security features. You generally don’t need to pay for McAfee just to get basic protection, especially if you already avoid suspicious links and downloads.
