Random system freezes after adding an 8GB RAM stick to my i9-12900HK mini PC

My Windows 11 mini PC with an Intel Core i9-12900HK and integrated Iris Xe graphics has started completely freezing at random. The screen, audio, and input lock up, and I have to hold the power button for about five seconds to shut it down. It has happened more than ten times.

The problem began after I added an 8GB RAM module alongside the original 16GB module, giving me 24GB in Flex Mode. Gaming performance improved and the integrated graphics correctly reported a dual-channel configuration, but the system sometimes freezes during games such as CS2 or Fortnite and sometimes shortly after a cold boot while sitting at the desktop. There are no blue screens or obvious temperature-related warnings.

Could mixing different RAM capacities, timings, or voltage settings be causing this? Should I disable XMP, test the modules individually, run a memory diagnostic, or replace the 8GB stick with a matching 16GB module for a 32GB kit?

The fact that it also freezes at the desktop does not rule out memory. A bad or marginal RAM configuration can fail under light use as well as gaming, and a complete freeze without a blue screen is consistent with low-level hardware instability. Replacing the mismatched 8GB stick with a matched 16GB module should improve the odds, but test the current modules first so you do not overlook a faulty original stick or a motherboard slot.

Mixing memory can absolutely cause this kind of hard lock, even when Windows recognizes the full capacity and dual-channel or Flex Mode appears to work. The modules may have different timings, voltage requirements, memory chips, or stability limits. I would remove the new stick and run the system with the original 16GB for a while. If the freezes stop, test the new module by itself and then test both together with memory diagnostics. A matched 2x16GB kit is the safer long-term solution.

Start by loading the BIOS defaults and disabling XMP or any memory overclock. Then update the mini PC's BIOS if a stable update is available. Run a bootable memory test for several passes, preferably with each stick separately and then with both installed. One error is enough to treat the configuration as unstable. Also check that both modules are the correct DDR generation and supported speed for the system.
