What Supplies and Study Habits Would Help Me Succeed in a Systems Administration Program?

I'm about to start a systems administration program and I'm excited to get going. Are there any useful IT-specific supplies or equipment I should plan to buy, or should I keep things minimal at first? I'd also appreciate advice on how to get the most out of my classes and build practical skills without burning myself out.

Take thorough notes, but focus on understanding why systems work rather than only remembering specific commands. It’s also worth paying attention to project management, business processes, and how IT supports an organization—those topics may seem less exciting, but they can matter a lot in your career. Keep some non-technical hobbies too, since constantly tinkering can lead to burnout.

Build labs whenever you can and ask lots of questions. Set up test environments with different operating systems, networking tools, and services, then deliberately break things and work out how to fix them. Hands-on practice usually sticks much better than memorizing commands.

Don’t overbuy at the start. A reliable laptop, a few Ethernet cables, a USB drive, and eventually some inexpensive or spare hardware for tinkering should be enough. Used equipment can be great for practice, so collect affordable gear and find useful projects for it instead of spending heavily on new equipment.
