I'm planning to build a system with an RTX 5080 and have heard concerns about graphics-card power cables overheating or melting. Are there specific power supplies or connectors designed to prevent this, or is using a reputable PSU with enough wattage and some extra headroom sufficient?

A reputable top-tier PSU is more important than buying a flashy model marketed specifically for high-end graphics cards. Check independent PSU quality lists, choose an appropriate capacity, and prioritize a native modern GPU power cable.
If you already own a high-quality, sufficiently powerful PSU, you may not need to replace it. The cable connection is usually the bigger concern: plug it in firmly and avoid putting stress on the connector. Otherwise, a well-reviewed 850W–1050W ATX 3.1 unit should provide plenty of flexibility depending on the rest of the build.
Look for an ATX 3.1 power supply with a native 12V-2x6 GPU connector. That’s generally preferable to relying on adapters. The connector also needs to be inserted completely and kept free of sharp bends near the plug.
You probably don’t need anything exotic. Choose a reliable PSU from a reputable manufacturer, make sure its wattage is appropriate for the whole system, and leave some overhead for power spikes.

That clears it up—I was thinking of the newer ATX 3.1 models with the dedicated GPU connector.
