I use my PC exclusively for gaming, mostly Space Engineers, milsim games, and Microsoft Flight Simulator, and I play at 1440p. My current system has a Ryzen 9 7900, 32GB of DDR5-5600 memory, and an RTX 5080. Performance already feels good, but I'm considering a motherboard upgrade because I need more USB and M.2 connectivity for devices such as a HOTAS and VR headset. Since I may be replacing the motherboard anyway, would moving to an X3D processor provide a noticeable improvement, or would it make more sense to keep the Ryzen 9 7900?

There’s no simple resolution cutoff where X3D suddenly stops mattering. At 1440p, the benefit depends on whether the game is CPU- or GPU-limited. In a demanding flight simulator or a large Space Engineers world, the CPU may still be the bottleneck; in a graphically intensive game, the RTX 5080 may be doing most of the limiting. X3D processors often improve average performance and can make demanding scenes smoother, but upgrading only makes sense if benchmarks show your current CPU is holding you back.
A 7800X3D, 9800X3D, or similar gaming-focused X3D processor would generally outperform the 7900 in games, particularly when you’re CPU-limited at 1440p or targeting very high frame rates. The difference will shrink when the RTX 5080 is the limiting factor, but X3D can still help with CPU-heavy scenes and simulation workloads. Check actual GPU usage, frame times, and 1% lows in the games you play before spending the money.
That’s mainly why I’m considering it. I already want a motherboard with more USB and M.2 ports, so I wondered whether it would be sensible to change the CPU at the same time. My current processor is the non-X Ryzen 9 7900.
You would probably see an improvement with an X3D chip, especially in simulation-heavy games, milsim titles, and flight simulators. Those games can benefit from the extra cache and often respond well to better CPU performance. That said, the Ryzen 9 7900 is already a strong gaming CPU, so the upgrade would be an uplift rather than a dramatic transformation. If your frame rates and frame pacing already feel good, there’s no urgent reason to replace it.

The main advantage isn’t guaranteed to be better frame-rate lows in every situation; X3D chips are usually just faster overall in games because of the extra cache. The improvement varies considerably by title and settings.
