What GPU pairs well with a Ryzen 5 5600X for gaming?

My current graphics card is artifacting, so I need to replace it. I'm considering an AMD card, though I'm open to NVIDIA if it offers better value. I'm worried that buying a high-end card such as a Radeon 9070 would leave my Ryzen 5 5600X as a major bottleneck. What GPU would be the most sensible choice for this system, especially for 1440p gaming?

For a balanced upgrade, the Radeon RX 9060 XT with 16GB of VRAM makes a lot of sense. It should pair well with the 5600X without requiring you to upgrade the rest of the system immediately, and the extra VRAM is useful for newer games.

If you play at 1440p, a Radeon 9070 can still work reasonably well depending on the games and settings. The CPU bottleneck may not be severe at higher resolutions, but I’d avoid paying a premium for a card with only 12GB of VRAM. The 9060 XT 16GB is a safer value choice if you aren’t planning a CPU upgrade soon.

There’s always some bottleneck somewhere, so don’t choose a GPU solely around eliminating it. Get the best card that fits your budget, since a stronger GPU can remain useful when you eventually replace the CPU. If the 5600X limits performance, increasing the resolution or graphics settings can shift more of the workload to the GPU.

That said, CPU overhead is real. A 5600X won’t get the same performance from an extremely high-end card as a newer processor would, so pairing it with something like a 5090 would be excessive for most systems.
