I'm looking for recommendations on UPS features or specific models that can reliably keep servers online during storms. Several customer systems have shut off instantly during brief power flickers instead of transferring to battery. The systems use separate 1000VA tower UPS units from APC and CyberPower, and both units work when deliberately unplugged, so the issue may involve surges, unstable line conditions, battery health, sizing, or the UPS operating mode. Are standby or line-interactive units sufficient, or is an online double-conversion UPS the better choice for server equipment?

A 1000VA unit may be undersized depending on the server’s real draw and startup behavior. Measure the combined load rather than relying on the power-supply rating, and make sure the UPS can support the load in watts as well as VA. If a server has redundant power supplies, splitting them across two UPS units can also introduce complications, so verify that the configuration is intentional and supported.
For mission-critical equipment, look specifically for an online, double-conversion UPS. It continuously converts incoming AC to DC and back to clean AC, so the load doesn’t have to wait for a transfer during a flicker or voltage disturbance. Eaton 5PX/9PX and Vertiv Liebert GXT5 are examples of this class, though the right model depends on the load and required runtime.
Before replacing everything, check the basics: battery age, actual wattage, UPS event logs, load percentage, and whether the equipment is plugged into battery-backed outlets rather than surge-only outlets. A battery can pass the built-in test but collapse under load, and old batteries are a very common cause of sudden shutdowns. Keeping the UPS around 60% or less of its usable capacity also leaves a healthier margin.
Replacing the batteries fixed this exact symptom for me. The units reported that the batteries were good, but they only lasted a few seconds when the power failed.
Consumer standby models are fine for home electronics and brief interruptions, but they’re not the best fit for servers that must remain online. A properly maintained double-conversion UPS with replacement batteries, monitoring, and enough capacity costs more than a basic tower unit, but that price reflects cleaner power and fewer transfer-related interruptions.
Storms can cause surges, brownouts, and rapid voltage changes rather than a clean outage. Upstream surge protection installed by an electrician can help protect the building and UPS equipment, but it won’t replace a properly sized UPS. For important systems, choose a unit with network management and event logging so you can see whether the shutdown was caused by overload, battery failure, transfer problems, or an input-power condition.

Line-interactive units can handle many ordinary outages, but they still have to transfer to battery. Double-conversion is the safer choice when even a brief interruption is unacceptable.
